Hardly a week goes by without an update notification popping up on your PC or mobile phone. First, Windows needs updating; then there’s a new version of the Instagram app, and later, the antivirus software.
But why do they keep nagging you?

Turn on automatic updates – avoid data breaches
This is the recommendation from the Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM). In an article of the same name, they state:
“Computer systems and machines lacking up-to-date hardware and software are a primary reason why hackers gain direct access to computer systems and platforms.”
In other words, updating your devices is one of the most important and effective measures you can take to avoid being hacked.
Updates improve security
No matter how skilled software developers are, or how often they test their programs, there will always be something they have overlooked. If hackers discover these “holes” before the developers do, users of the software may be at risk.
As security vulnerabilities are discovered, small software updates (known as “patches”) are developed to fix them.
As a general rule, nothing is perfect, but things are constantly being improved. That is why it is important to update your apps, programs, antivirus software, and operating system as soon as updates become available. Doing so ensures your devices are as secure as possible.
Updates can boost performance
When you update your operating system, apps, or other software, you sometimes get an upgrade compared to previous versions. As developers receive user feedback, they incorporate it to create even better products. Consequently, newer versions are often leaner, more reliable, and perform better.
As everyone knows, there is a vast difference between a Model T Ford and a Ford Mustang Mach-E, just as there is a huge difference between Windows 95 and Windows 11.
You can’t do much about Sunday drivers on the road, but you shouldn’t have to put up with the frustration of a slow computer. One simple step that can help is ensuring everything is up to date.
Updates unlock new possibilities
Technological progress never stands still, and every advancement brings a need to update and upgrade devices. Simply put, updates enable capabilities that didn’t exist before.
The latest update might offer better VoIP support, include a cloud storage account, give you access to more games, improve image editing filters, and so on.
When it is no longer possible to update the device, either because it is too old or the manufacturer has stopped providing updates (End-of-Life/EOL), it must be replaced. However, as long as the option to update exists, you should take advantage of it.
How to enable automatic updates on your personal devices
The best approach is to let apps, software, antivirus programs, and the operating system update themselves. This saves you the hassle and stress, while ensuring you get the latest features and remain protected against the newest threats.
